I bought a Hiro H50193 Wireless USB Network Adapter, lsusb reports as "ID 0bda:8171 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.".
**UPDATE:** For Ubuntu 10.4, please see here!
It came with a linux driver called rtl8192su_linux_2.4_2.6.0003.1019.2009. This driver did not compile with kernel 2.6.31.
After a bit of Googling, and lots of trial and error, I found a forum with a driver that worked. It compiled and installed correctly and the device worked. In the end, it was detected as a RTL8188S, even though it comes with a RTL8192SU driver.
I've attached the driver that worked for me.
For n00bs, here's what I did to install it:
$ unzip rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.20100202.zip $ cd rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.20100202/driver $ tar -zxf rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.20100202.tar.gz $ cd rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0006.20100202 $ make $ sudo make install $ sudo modprobe 8712u
Your device should now be correctly detected and hopefully work.
